How do I prevent videos from launching automatically when I visit a web page? I don't want to disable java altogether.
Some pages have so many of these boxes that you end up hearing two or more at once and it's really annoying. I want the video boxes to just sit there doing nothing unless and until I click the play arrow.

Update Firefox - there is a Click to Play feature which can be enabled in about:config
plugins.click_to_play
Do not enable click-to-play in current Firefox releases, especially not in that old Firefox 12 version that you are using.
There are too many issues with it.
Maybe this extension:
- Stop YouTube Autoplay: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/stop-youtube-autoplay
Thanks for the suggestions.
I have updated my browser as suggested, which also necessitated a java update. Changing the click-to-play setting did prevent videos from playing, but now I don't even see a still image to know whether it's anything I might want to play. (I just see the gray "get plug in" box.) I found it also prevented me from accessing some other java-launched content (in one case a pdf file I wanted to open).
I think I'll put it back and try the next suggestion.
