My bookmarks suddenly got erased by themselves and i could no longer add any bookmarks, i reinstalled firefox and connected it to my sync but the bookmarks do not show up. I have tried manually restoring them from a json file and nothing shows up. I have tried it using firefox 17, 17.0.1 and 16.0.2 Any ideas?

Possibly you have a damaged places.sqlite file in your Firefox profile. Delete that file and restart Firefox. The new one should pick up the bookmarks again from the backups. You could back up the bookmarks first to another location first just in case.

Thank you for the suggestion, however that did not solve my issue. The bookmarks are there, i just do no see them in the bookmark menu.

Did you try to delete all places files in the Firefox Profile Folder?

Do you mean that you see the bookmarks in the Bookmarks and History Manager (Library) and in the bookmarks sidebar and also in the drop down list of the Bookmarks Menu button, but not in the Firefox menu?

  • Bookmarks > Show All Bookmarks
  • View > Sidebar > Bookmarks

I mean if a go to a site that i have bookmarked, the little star is golden and i can edit the bookmark, but if i go to the any of the ways to see all my bookmars, i.e. Bookmarks and History Manager (Library), bookmarks sidebar and drop down list, it is empty. I have already deleted the places files a few times and the the local file as well.

Are you using Firefox Sync or another extension to sync bookmarks?

--- Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).

  • Do not click the Reset button on the Safe mode start window or otherwise make changes.

I am using sync, but starting in safe mode does nothing to resolve my issue.

You can try to disable Sync temporarily to see if that helps to restore the bookmarks.

I tried doing that, as well as unistalling and reinstalling firefox and it did nothing. It appears as though when i restore the bookmarks, they are not placed in the proper location so as to be seen. I can import via html file but not restore.
