So Firefox was working fine and I closed it to go the bathroom and when I came back I clicked opened it again it updated for a few seconds and now it isn't opening. Firefox crash reporter keeps popping up and everytime I click restart firefox this reporter thing keeps popping up. I tried opening it in safe mode and still the same thing happens. I reinstalled by clearing all the leftover data by cleaning program, I also reinstalled it at a different location on my computer and there is no result. Please help!

I've read the past posts about this and now of those have helped me.

We're sorry to hear that your Firefox seems to be crashing when you open it. Please perform the following steps to give us a crash report ID that helps us find out more about the cause of the crash.

  1. Open the Finder by clicking the smiley face icon in the dock.
  2. Navigate to the following directory: ~ / Library / Application Support / Firefox / Crash reports / submitted.
  3. Now, you should see a list of files that contain reports. Click the gear icon in the toolbar (or open the View menu), then select Arrange by > Creation date to get the most recent files at the top of the window.
  4. Open the most recent 5 files with a text editor and copy the IDs.
  5. Paste each ID into the reply window on the forums.

Thanks in advance!

You can find more information and troubleshooting steps in the Troubleshoot Firefox crashes (closing or quitting unexpectedly) article.

This is a common crash. The most likely reason is probably malware. I also note mention in your crash report of a particular item 'lwgbixtr.dll' that looks suspicious to me, and I get no results on it if I do a web search, that makes me wonder if it could be something generated by malware.

You can try some of the following programs to scan for malware:

Further information can be found in the article

In particular ensure you scan and consider quarantining the file lwgbixtr.dll . Please post back with what you try and how you get on. Please include details of any scan results that detect malware.

Note general information and tips about crashes are in the article:

Although this is one of the top crashes Mozilla engineers were having problems reproducing the problem, if they are still looking for users with the problem would it be ok if I pass on your your contact information (Initially just the user name so that this forum's Private Messaging may be used).

Update.

I can confirm Mozilla engineers would still like information on this, and of course will help you try to sort out this problem. May I ask that you keep a copy of the file lwgbixtr.dll (so please QUARANTINE BUT DO NOT DELETE THE FILE).

The Firefox user advocacy expert Tyler would be keen to help you with this problem (see). Perhaps you would wish to contact Tyler by email or Private Message.

Sorry John...I read this post pretty late and I fixed the issue. So what happened was that I ran Windows 7 in safe mode and it was working fine and I was pretty sure it was a virus. I ran a scan with Microsoft security essentials and nothing was found. Then I ran TDSSKiller - AntiRootkit Utility and I kept finding malware in the Java software. Then in safemode I tried system restore and it was working fine. I'm pretty sure the virus came from one of my addons because once my addons were being updated for Firefox 18...It did not work after that and I kept getting the crash reporter.

Thanks for posting back. Glad you sorted it out.

The engineers seem to have one copy of this now, but it appears it is proving rather difficult to recreate this problem and definitely identify any associated malware. It is one of the most frequent crash signatures on Firefox 18.

Hello memee156, try disabling graphics hardware acceleration. Since this feature was added to Firefox, it has gradually improved, but there still are a few glitches.

You might need to restart Firefox in order for this to take effect, so save all work first (e.g., mail you are composing, online documents you're editing, etc.).

Then perform these steps:

  • Click the orange Firefox button at the top left, then select the "Options" button, or, if there is no Firefox button at the top, go to Tools > Options.
  • In the Firefox options window click the Advanced tab, then select "General".
  • In the settings list, you should find the Use hardware acceleration when available checkbox. Uncheck this checkbox.
  • Now, restart Firefox and see if the problems persist.

Additionally, please check for updates for your graphics driver by following the steps mentioned in the following Knowledge base articles:

Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems

Upgrade your graphics drivers to use hardware acceleration and WebGL

Did this fix your problems? Please report back to us!

Thank you.
