A month ago I had fraud on my bank account, up until then, I had been shopping online using firefox without problem. Around this time I got a java related virus on my computer - I don't know if these two events were related. Since then I have been issued a new debit card. When I enter the new card details into various website accounts, (amazon, asos, tesco etc) Firefox says 'card number invalid' and will not let me proceed. I have no problem with entering the new card details on the same accounts with google chrome. I have tried deleting cookies from specific websites, clearing the mozilla cache and deleting/reinstalling mozilla amongst other things.

The problem is not with the card, there are no restrictions on it etc and I am definitely typing the card number in correctly. I have no idea what has changed that's causing this, please help!

This can be caused by corrupted cookies or cookies that aren't send or otherwise blocked.

Clear the cache and the cookies from sites that cause problems.

"Clear the Cache":

  • Tools > Options > Advanced > Network > Cached Web Content: "Clear Now"

"Remove Cookies" from sites causing problems:

  • Tools > Options > Privacy > Cookies: "Show Cookies"

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).

  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe mode start window or otherwise make changes.

If clearing cookies doesn't work then it is possible that the cookies.sqlite file that stores the cookies is corrupted.

Rename (or delete) cookies.sqlite (cookies.sqlite.old) and delete other present cookie files like cookies.sqlite-journal in the Firefox Profile Folder in case the file cookies.sqlite got corrupted.

Hi there cor-el, thank you for your response. I have deleted cookies.sqlite, cookies.sqlite-shm and cookies.sqlite-wal as well as permissions.sqlite. I have done all of the other things you suggested too but the problem remains unchanged.

What steps can I take now? Are there corrupted cookies stored somewhere else?

Which security software (firewall, anti-virus) do you have?

Try to boot the computer in Windows Safe mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) as a test to see if that helps.

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.

See "Creating a profile":

If the new profile works then you can transfer some files from an existing profile to the new profile, but be careful not to copy corrupted files.

Hi cor-el.

Creating and using a new profile had no effect.

However, rebooting in safe mode worked! I could enter my card details without a problem although I was nervous as I wasn't sure if I had any security whilst doing so.

I use free Avast anti-virus software version 7.0.1474. Could this be causing the problem?

Yest, that is possible. Also make sure that your security software isn't blocking cookies.
