Firefox homepage says version 23.0.1 installed is current but ver 24.0 is the current ver
When I've manually checked version via Firefox>Help>About (as I knew FF had recently updated) my install of FF ver 23.0.1 says "new version available at www.mozilla.com". I then click the link and it takes me to the Firefox homepage, but the homepage says, "congratulations you have the current version installed" (or did it say "version up to date"? Whatever it is wrong!)
However if you click on "download a fresh copy" it offers you Firefox ver 24.0.
I have checked this on two laptops, both running latest version of Windows 7. One Firefox install has many add-ons, eg. flashblock, Ad Block Plus, Https Everywhere etc. so guessed it may be related to one of those. But checking my wifes laptop which only has the flash block & "start page" add-on installed still gave the same result (I disabled flash block and restarted FF) i.e. said it was current when in fact it isn't the current version. (Ver 23.0.1 was installed via stub install).
Most people would probably never realize this & may not update to later versions.
(P.S. I have downloaded the latest version 24.0 and it installed correctly)

try to remove Cookies - Information that websites store on your computer or clear your browser cache How to clear the Firefox cache
Hello BenR,
Certain Firefox problems can be solved by performing a Clean reinstall. This means you remove Firefox program files and then reinstall Firefox. Please follow these steps:
Note: You might want to print these steps or view them in another browser.
- Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from http://www.mozilla.org and save the setup file to your computer.
- After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (click Exit from the Firefox or File menu).
- Delete the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default:
- Windows:
- C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
- C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
- Mac: Delete Firefox from the Applications folder.
- Linux: If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it - see Install Firefox on Linux. If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the Firefox download page, simply remove the folder firefox in your home directory.
- Windows:
- Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
- Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
- Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.
Please report back to see if this helped you!
Thank you.
Thanks for replies,
However, Clearing Cookies & Cache (and even rebooting PC) didn't fix the problem. Firefox homepage still identifies version 23.0.1 as current, i.e. it says "Congrats! You're using the latest version of Firefox"
I don't have the time/inclination to do a "Clean Install" this time, but will try that next time if I have the same problem updating FROM ver. 24.x (It's not a problem for me really as I keep up to date with releases etc & can do this manually, I was just thinking it may be quite a widespread issue for your typical FF user as it's occurred on both our laptops at the same time, maybe suggesting a deeper issue?)
P.S. I have "automatically install updates" enabled on wife's laptop & "check for updates, but let me choose to install" on my laptop ...... but it hadn't updated/notified us an update was available on either system. If this is true for other users most would not bother to check & assume ver 23.0.1 was the latest.
Thanks
Ben,
thanks for letting us know about the problem.
On cause of that sort of problem could be that you have the wrong User Agent String (UAS) displaying. That is not the case at present. We can see that from the information you supplied when posting the question.
If any of the other computers are not yet updated and still show this problem could you post a question from them using Firefox and following the prompts to include the troubleshooting information relating to them. That may help us to see what is going wrong. If you do that please then post back in this thread to let us know.
Hi John, I have made another post at the link below as you requested which includes system details of laptop which still has FF version 23.0.1 installed.
https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/972815
Thanks
John Your remark about UAS made me think. I therefore closed FF (ver 23.0.1) and restarted it via the "run as administrator" option.
FF loaded (it went to the www.firefox.com page automatically as I had not run it since last update, the webpage again said "Congrats! You're using the latest version of Firefox", which it wasn't as it was ver 23)
I then went to Firefox > Help > About Firefox. It stated ver was 23.0.1 I clicked "check for updates", it began to check as normal, but this time it downloaded the updated ver 24.0 from the help window as normal and did not give me the www.firefox.com link as it did before from the "standard user" account.
I then ran Firefox as normal (i.e. not as administrator) it then ran as version 24.0 and went through add-ons check etc. So my system all fixed up.
But it appears this may be a problem for people checking version from a "standard user" windows login? If my experience is anything to go by ....
Thanks to all for your help Ben
