I tried all the support answers to resolve this issue, including turning the auto complete from off to on by right clicking in the username field in my yahoo email account and selecting inspect element, but this did not work. Why is this only a problem with yahoo and not other sites I log into? I never used to have this problem with yahoo email, frustrating!

hello lucelou, websites can specify if browsers should be able to save username/passwords (through the autocomplete="off" attribute in the login form in the html source code) - this is also the case with yahoo.

you can either install an addon or use a bookmarklet to circumvent this restriction.

Usernames and passwords are not saved

Hello Philip, I have never used install an addon and use a bookmarklet so I wouldn't know where to start and what it is for!

you'll have to (at least temporarily) install the "Remember Passwords" extension:

  1. visit https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/remember-passwords/ and add the addon to firefox. you'll have to confirm the request to let the addon install and restart firefox once afterwards.
  2. go to your email login page & enter your username/password as you normally would - firefox should now prompt you to save the password.
  3. if you have saved your password for the site, you can go ahead and remove this extension again, since it won't be necessary to automatically fill in your login-credentials on subsequent visits of your email site: Disable or remove Add-ons

Since when did this become a problem? Up until recently I was able to open my yahoo email without entering my username and password.

Thanks, I will give this a go

Hang on, I may be wrong to be dubious but does Stanimir Stamenkov then have my username and password information?!

simple answer: NO, the extension only woks locally and tweaks the firefox password manager to not respect the bit of information set by yahoo that causes the browser not to save the password.
