Set home page to what I want. Everytime I start Firefox, system reverts to this stupid safesearch home page. Don't want it. How do I get rid of it. Even if I delete it from the list, it keeps coming back

Set search engine to google. Everytime I start prog, reverts to this stupid safesearch. If you can't stop this, I will bin Firefox. Even if I delete it from the list, it keeps coming back

They are both annoying and don't allow me to make my own decisions as a permanent solution. I'm quite capable of making them and I can on all other browsers. Why not Firefox

It sounds like you have a third party program that has taken over your search engine, home page, and/or the default new tab page. Fortunately, this can be remedied easily:

  1. At the top of the Firefox window, click on the Firefox button (Tools menu in Windows XP), and then click Add-ons. The Add-ons Manager tab will open.
  2. In the Add-ons Manager tab, select the Extensions panel.
  3. Select the toolbar you wish to remove.
  4. Click the remove button.
  5. Click "Restart now" if it pops up. Your tabs will be saved and restored after the restart.

After Firefox restarts, install the Search Reset Tool. This will remove the rest of the traces of this program from your Firefox.

For further information, please read Remove a toolbar that has taken over your Firefox search or home page.

Note that your System Details List shows that you have a user.js file in the profile folder to initialize some prefs on each start of Firefox.

The user.js file is only present if you or other software has created it, so normally it wouldn't be there. you can check its content with a plain text editor if you didn't create this file yourself.

The user.js file is read each time you start Firefox and initializes preferences to the value specified in this file, so preferences set via user.js can only be changed temporarily for the current session.

If you do not keep changes after a restart or otherwise have problems with preferences, see:
