G'Day,

Have done a fresh install of Win7 32bit and downloaded FF25. When going into Options / Downloads / Save files to shows Downloads, and using browse to change this location pops up a window with User/Downloads. I can not find a way of getting out of this, not even even to Desktop (which is the last place i would want to download files to). Could somebody help me with this, because i prefer to set my own Download location, which is not necessarily the one that the OS thinks i should use.

Thank you,

werner

Current Firefox versions remember the download directory based upon the URL, so if the URL changes then the default folder may be chosen if there hasn't been selected a download folder before for that server.

You can disable this feature to remember the download directory via the Boolean pref browser.download.lastDir.savePerSite on the about:config page.
The browser.download.lastDir.savePerSite pref doesn't exist by default (it is a hidden pref), so you need to create it.

Create a new Boolean pref with the name browser.download.lastDir.savePerSite and set the value to false.

You can delete the content-prefs.sqlite file in the Profile Folder to only remove settings stored in this file and keep the exceptions that are stored in permissions.sqlite that would be lost if you clear the "Site Preferences" via Clear Recent History.

Because I save various downloads in various places, I much prefer the radio button [Always ask me where to save files]. Because I clicked that button in Options/Downloads, every download starts by displaying a dialog box that remembers where I last saved a download. If I want to use a different place now, I just walk the file tree a little in that dialog box. I have FF25 on Win7 also, but wi 64-bit.

I vaguely remember having your difficulty under earlier versions of FF on earlier versions of Win when I thought I wanted a single permanent override of the default, but [Always ask ...] made the problem moot by providing more flexibility.

Thank you very much OldNerd. An interesting and useful work-around, but unfortunately not the solution i was looking for.

Thank you cor-el, i stand i awe at your knowledge looking at your solution, but it makes me wonder whether it would not be easier (and user friendly) to give the Browse button full navigational access ?

I did find a work-around last night: after i changed the OS default Downloads location from /User to another partition (i prefer to keep data out of C:\ ) and went back to FF options, it showed the new Downloads location after Save files to. At this point the Browse button allowed me to navigate wherever i wanted.

Best regards and Thank You again,

Werner
