Old emails in "inbox" cannot be opened , just get a blank page. This occured after I had deleted an unwanted email. Then all previous emails would not open , although "subject line" still is there. New emails recieved are OK , can be opened and read. How do I get back the "lost" information?

Typical symptoms of file corruption. If it is too bad you most likely will not get them back. Right click the folder and select Properties. Then Repair Folder.

Then read this article about maintaining your email system. http://kb.mozillazine.org/Keep_it_working_(Thunderbird)

Right clicking on the folder (the email highlighted subject line) did not give me "properties" to select , nor "repair folder". Opening "Tools" I selected "Error Console" which opened a window showing over 60 error messsages with the majority reading as follows:- "Warning: Use of attributes' nodeValue attribute is deprecated,Use value instead. Souce File:mailbox://users/(my name)/Library/Thunderbird/Profiles/2100polk.default/Mail/mail.bigpond-1.com/inbox?number=586571" . Is this my problem , what does it mean , and how can I fix this ????????

The email subject line is not a folder. The inbox or sent is a folder.

Thank you , but now all the "corrupted" subject lines have dissapeared and could not "undo" the command ! So now I have lost everything and I do not know what caused the original problem nor how to avoid it in the future ! Is this because I'm using a Mac ?

They were lost before you compacted. Only the empty headers were displayed. If you read the linked page you would see how to help prevent this in the future.
