How can I stop Windows from timing out trying to open Firefox?

With the last two versions of Firefox, every time Firefox wants to load a notice or message when I open it, Windows times out and says it cannot find Firefox. I am running Vista and this happens every few months and is very irritating. Please can this be fixed without my having to uninstall and re-install? This always happens when it turns out there was a notice or message that is supposed to open before Firefox loads.

It has happened again! I installed the upgrade of Firefox. There is probably already a new bug fix, and now I have to uninstall all over again. This has to be a Vista problem and I wish there was instant karma for Microsoft and the trouble they caused forcing it out onto people before it would work with anything. I can't afford an upgrade now.
