The bookmark toolbar shows below the address bar but there is no icon of any of the bookmarks.

The bookmark toolbar shows below the address bar but there is no icon of any of the bookmarks.

Chosen solution

It is possible that the "Bookmarks Toolbar items" is not on the Bookmarks Toolbar.

Make sure that toolbars like the "Bookmarks Toolbar" are visible.

  • Firefox menu button > Customize > Show/Hide Toolbars
  • View > Toolbars (press F10 to show the Menu bar)
  • Right-click empty toolbar area

Use Toolbar Layout (Customize) to open the Customize window and set which toolbar items to display.

  • check that "Bookmarks Toolbar items" is on the Bookmarks Toolbar
  • if "Bookmarks Toolbar items" is not on the Bookmarks Toolbar then drag it back from the Customize palette into the Customize window to the Bookmarks Toolbar
  • if missing items are in the Customize palette then drag them back from the Customize window on the toolbar
  • if you do not see an item on a toolbar and in the Customize palette then click the "Restore Defaults" button to restore the default toolbar setup

When you bookmark a page by default it go to Unsorted Bookmarks folder, you can go to the Library and organize them.

See more here Use bookmark folders to organize your bookmarks and Sort your bookmarks to quickly find the ones you want

This is how i have sorted 'em. I have put them in 'Boomark Toolbar' folder but they still dont show up in the tool bar.

Use the customise (?) option from the new button, check the bookmarks toolbar actually contains the icon for bookmark icons if not drag it back before exiting customise.

If that fails to help then rename the file localstore.rdf maybe to localstore.rdf.old1 that will cause Firefox to recreate the file with default settings. You will lose your customisations of toolbars etc., but your bookmarks toolbar should work again.
( I have not checked but by default the bookmarks toolbar may be hidden; if so you will need to set it to be viewed again. )

Hi duffer04

I answered to you in the other thread where you posted, so please continue there or create a new thread if that didn't help.

Thanks for your help. Things seem to improving. I wish I could get the json file to load into Firefox as it has all my saved stuff. It will be a pain to do it one by one.

more options

If you can't restore a JSON backup then there might be a problem with the places.sqlite database file and you can try to rename this file to make Firefox create a new places.sqlite file.

Did you try other JSON backups?

Note that the xxxx part in the bookmarks-####-##-##_xxxx_$$$$.json name is the total number of bookmarks in the file (includes folders and separators).

Thanks again. Fixed! I went to the old firefox data file that was created when I did a restart a while back. After reading some of the files you directed me to I copied a recent places.sqlite into the current profile and lo and behold all the old bookmarks now show up. Of course the most recent bookmarks of the past month are not there but that is ok.

I upgraded to the latest version, and now none of my bookmarks show in the bookmarks toolbar.

There available if go to the to and click on bookmarks, but not as a toolbar along the top portion of the screen.

Make sense? Not to me. That is why I generally avoid upgrading.

Somebody always comes along and makes some change to the UI, usually with bad and unintended consequences.

Check that you still have "Bookmarks Toolbar items" positioned on the Bookmarks Toolbar

Corel

Why did this become necessary.

Why would I not want my bookmarks displayed in the bookmark toolbar?

By what possible anal-retentive savant way of thinking would I not want that.

Help me understand so I don't feel feel like wringing someones neck.

I got my answer, you get my wrath.

Help me understand.

Quick lesson: Anal-retentive savant way of thinking.

Constant change, it has to be easy to do everything without thinking about anything, and everything will be soon be defined by micro-precise hand movements.

I do appreciate the answer, but I don't enjoy somebody else creating problems for me.
