Thunderbird downloading 3000+ messages over again and again
A user is having his email in TB3 downloaded over and over again, this is about 3000+ emails. The email is gmail and it is an imap setup. I have deleted the popstate.dat file but a new one wasn't created. Subsequent searches didn't find any other popstate.dat files on the computer (searched for hidden files as well). Removed the subscription to the 'All Mail' folder. Unticked the global search as TB kept indexing. Changed the sync settings to only download email from the last 12 months and email is being 'kept on the computer' setting is checked. Anti virus is microsoft security essentials and it isn't real time scanning the email. TB is on the exclusion list for scanning.
I know this has been an issue for a while in TB and the user has had this issue before but it has just come back. He isn't at work today, so I don't know what was done previously. Does anyone have any possible solutions other than the ones that I have tried?

Email is not downloaded on IMAP, it is accessed as it resides on a server.
How are the emails deleted? Keep in mind GMail "archives" email, they are not permanently deleted if you use the web interface.
It would also help if you could provide a screenshot of the Server settings section for the account (obviously removing any specific/ private information), there are options to remove the email immediately when deleted, etc. which could affect how this is handled.
If you need help to create a screenshot, please see How do I create a screenshot of my problem?
