I receive several messages inviting me to download updates to software which I use. I think they are attempts to get me to assist with phishing or such. The latest 'Software update available' amplifies - "This new Firefox version contains important security and bug fixes, and offers much improved page rendering times." Is this generated by anybody at Mozilla, or automatically at Mozilla? Does Mozilla broadcast these types of messages? As Firefox is set to automatically update, then these messages should have no useful function, other than to assist with downloading some unwelcome device which I do not need. Are there any plug-ins which I should discard?

Chosen solution

Updating to Firefox 35 is currently throttled and not everybody gets the new update offered at this moment. If that is the case for you then you can update manually via Help > About.
