When I open Firefox on my homepage, there is an empty box in the middle of the screen. No script; just a bar to click on and a blank check box and a (?). Nothing works and to get out of the Firefox screen, I have to close it with the task manager. I can open in a new window and the box does not appear-that's what I'm using now. Do I have a virus? Any help will be appreciated. Thanks. Carol

Chosen solution

The AOL toolbar extension has been reported to cause this issue with a blank pop-up window appearing on startup.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window
