I try to update old to new sync. On login, I get the message (in German) "Error 500. Oops, something went wrong. We will fix this"

With "login" I mean the page that appears after I click on "Extras -> Configure sync" (or however it is called in the English version).

I have already disconnected one of my computers from the old sync. And it is the newest version of Firefox. What I have NOT done, is step 2 "disconnect ALL your devices". This is impossible because I often changed the Linux Distro on many computers in the last years and I synced Firefox everywhere, and in the (old) list of devices, there are still devices shown that do not exist any more since a long time, but you cannot delete them.

So, to be careful, I have not disconnected Firefox on my other computers (and still use old sync), because I fear that then I will lose ALL my data.

I have this problem on one of my laptops, Ubuntu 14.04, V 38.0.

Chosen solution

Error 500 Oje because something went wrong. We've been notified and get down to correct the problem.

Which version of Firefox is that happening with? If it with Firefox 29 or later, go here to setup a new Account. https://accounts.firefox.com/signup Make sure that you use a different Username / Email Address than you are using for your other Sync account.

Once the account is created, sign in to Sync thru Firefox using I already have an account!

I understand that there are some computers on the old sync and some on the new, however there are remote computers that you cannot disconnect from sync.

It might be possible to download an older version of Firefox with the older version of Sync and to attach it to the old account to get a copy of that merged profile locally. Then you can disconnect if this is the way you would like to go. However, very shortly all old sync accounts will be migrated to the new sync.

No, there is not yet a computer on the new sync. I tried to update from old to new sync with one of my laptops, and this was the first try to update the first of my computers, and I immediately got (and still have) this error.

Now no sync works on this laptop any more, and I do not dare to touch the others (which use the old sync).

Concerning old sync accounts that I cannot delete: For example an account of a Firefox once running on an old installation of Linux Mint that I have replaced long ago by some other distro (and gave the computer a new name), but I still see this open Mint tabs in the list of other computers. And I have an entry of a Firefox that I once ran under Windows XP, which I have replaced by Xubuntu 1,5 years ago or so.

You can't use the old Sync and the new Sync on the same Sync account - they aren't compatible with each other. Once you update a Sync account it will only work with Firefox 29 and later versions of Firefox.

Also, the old Sync won't be around forever, so you need to make plans to update your older versions of Firefox to 29 or later - or setup your own Sync server if you want to continue using Firefox 28 or older versions with Sync. http://docs.services.mozilla.com/howtos/run-sync.html

My advice is to create a new Sync account for the "new" Sync with a device that already has your data. The other devices that are on the old version of Sync will continue to use the old Sync, until it is shut down. The "shut down" of the old Sync servers will probably happen before the end of this year, or possibly sooner - like maybe when the older ESR version is EOL'd in like 10 weeks or so.

I CANNOT CREATE A NEW SYNC ACCOUNT!

Everytime I click on Extras -> Configure Sync (or however it is called in the English version, mine is German), appears a page that says "Welcome to sync" with a button "Registration", and when I click on this button I get a page with

Fehler 500 Oje, da ist etwas schiefgegangen. Wir wurden benachrichtigt und machen uns an die Behebung des Problems.

Fehler = error in German

Yes, this worked with Firefox 38.0 on 2 machines. But I really had to follow your links and I had to enable cookies to make it work. I think your advice should definitely go into the instruction page. I spent hours googling around and trying configuration steps to solve this problem.

Your hint was the only one that worked. Thank you.

I really had to use your link also on my main PC(Linux Mint 17, Fiirefox V38.0). And I needed to enable cookies, it does not work without. Again: I think your advice should definitely go into the instruction page.

Thank you!

I have the same problem, and I don't understand the solution that worked for moziplex. I've successfully created a Firefox account from my personal laptop (running Ubuntu Linux), and successfully linked it to Firefox running on my Android 5 smartphone. I've successfully logged into my Firefox account from my work Desktop, running CentOS 6.6. However, Firefox on my work Desktop is still not synced with the other two platforms. What do I need to do after logging in to make it sync up? My login screen only gives me three options: "Change Password", "Delete Account", and "Sign Out".

Try to delete the account and start all over again. Maybe you will have to use a different email adress.
