Thanks for your diligent testing, and complete report.
This is a crash in the NVIDIA device driver. Does the crashing stop if you disable hardware acceleration at tools | options | advanced | general ??
Please post the contents of the graphics section of help | Troubleshooting. And, are you at the newest version of driver for your graphics card?
I am not able to get into tools | options | advanced | general, because it Instacrashes the moment I try to start.
Is there an alternative way I can disable this setting?
first start in safe mode https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/safe-mode
To my surprise, the issue resolved itself.
The only difference has been that I put the laptop into standby, traveled to a different location, and turned it back on again. Thunderbird just started without a problem, without even using safemode.
earlier, when i was troubleshooting the issue and installing/reinstalling, I also restarted the laptop several times, yet at the time, this made no difference to the crashing behavior.
