Firefox crashes frequently

Over the last couple of months, Firefox has started crashing frequently, often several times a day. It appears to happen randomly, regardless of how many tabs I have open or what I am currently doing. For example, sometimes it crashes when I try to download a file, other times when I am just reading a webpage that is already loaded. There appears to be no rhyme or reason to when or why it crashes. I have made sure Firefox, Windows, and all my plugins are up to date, and no mal-ware is detected on my computer.
