Thunderbird stopped opening pps in windows 7.
It used to open them but now I get "Sorry, PowerPoint can't read C:\users\... I already disabled my antivirus (Avast), but still will not open. I believed this started after Microsoft Office 2013 started putting up a message saying it had not been activated. I had it reactivated, but the pps would not open directly from Thunderbird. They have to be saved and then opened. Any help to open the pps directly from Thunderbird will be appreciated. Thank you

On the toolbar > Options > attachments > incoming
Delete any entry there for PPS. and then try again. My guess is the location of power-point has changed and deleting the entry will allow it to be recreated when you open one.
There are settings there to edit the entries, but deleting is less prone to human error and actually often is quicker over all.

Thank you for your reply, Matt. However even though I am not an expert, intuitively I tried that before posting my request for help. It didn't work, the entries have not been recreated and I am still getting the same message: "Sorry, PowerPoint can't read C:\users\Ed\AppData\Local\Temp\nsd6A49.tmp\ContainedTemp\Recyclage12143.pps" Is there anything else you can suggest?
Yes, turn off anti virus scanning of mail. That message indicates the file is damaged. One of the promary causes a file damage is anti virus scanning. Either incoming as your end or outgoing at the senders end.
If you save the attachment to your desktop and them open you indicate this works. So my guess is the issue is your end.
Thank you Matt for your efforts. Nothing worked. It took me a long time to retake this matter due to family illnesses. I'll try uninstalling and reinstalling Microsoft Office in a few days, when things improve at home.
