If my emails are on my computer in Thunderbird and I cancel the email account with the provider will the emails on my computer remain and be readable

I am about to cancel my account with the host of my email accounts and I want to know whether I will still have access to the emails that are on my computer in Thunderbird or whether I have to back them up in some way. Some of the emails have important information that I may require at a later date.

Are the emails really on your computer. If you use IMAP the answer is no. If using POP then they are on your computer.

Either way you need to make folders under Local Folders in Thunderbird and copy the messages that you want to keep there. After you are sure that the messages are in the new folders and you can open them you are safe to cancel the service.

Note I said COPY and not move. Many people seem to lose messages somehow making the move. If you copy them they are in both places.
