Some folder titles in the left pane (including local and archive ones I have created) are in bold type and show the number of unread messages. Others are in normal type and do not display the number of unread messages. I am unaware of anything I did different to create one way or the other. How can I change from one style to the other style?

Those in normal type have no unread messages.

That is part of the answer. What I found is that when I move unread messages into the folders in normal type, they automatically change to read.
