At the top of a composition window is the formatting toolbar. One section about in the middle has 3 A's in it. The first A is Bold. The second A is italics. The third A is Underline.

If any of these are selected they get a little darker and get a border added to them. Clicking them toggles them on and off.

The keyboard shortcut is control+b.
