How to solve a configuration/loginproblem with adding a new email account in thunderbird?
When I want to add a new email account to Thunderbird I get a error. The screen says that the password or username are not correct, but this is not the case, because I can loggin with the same username and password in webmail. The server settings that I used are also shown in the uploaded images. These were the settings I found on the website of xs4all (https://www.xs4all.nl/service/diensten/email/installeren/algemene-instellingen.htm). I used IMAP.

Be sure not to add a new mail account, but an existing account, usually done by choosing Tools (menu, press Alt when not visible) > Account Settings > Add Email Account (in the bottom left). You should see the images as reported on this page.
Also see the Automatic Account Configuration article.
If this doen’t help, please provide a screenshot of the exact error message.
This still doens't help. Therefore I send a screenshot of the exact error message. Hopefully you have a solution.
Has a solution been found for this problem?
Are those the settings that Thunderbird found for itself, or did you enter them manually? Have you tried the SSL alternatives given on their website? Have you tried TLS rather than STARTTLS?
What anti-virus/firewall precautions do you have in place? These have been known to interfere with the logging in process.
This are the settings that Thunderbird found for itself, but we try al other settings but no result. We use Avast firewall and virus. Email worked well with an IMAP account but then this error occurred and we could not install a new one. We thought the problem was in this account so we removed it and tried to reinstall. Your note that the firewall may give this problem , we will test and let it know if it has been successful. Thank you for your help.
I think you should try the settings given here:
incoming IMAP server: imap.xs4all.nl on port 993, SSL/TLS security, normal password authentication, User name = part of your address before the @
outgoing SMTP server: smtp.xs4all.nl on port 465, SSL/TLS security, normal password authentication, User name = part of your address before the @
After the latest updates of windows we installed a new imap account with the settings that Thunderbird found for itself and it works. Thank you for the support.
