I hate the new FIND bar popping up when I type a letter into the URL bar. How can I disable this?

With the 56.0 version I just had updated recently, every time I start to type www.anything.com into the url bar, the FIND bar pops up at the bottom of the page and so I wonder where my type is going. Then I see that it appears in this FIND bar. It is annoying to no end. Even if I am on a specific website and click in a local search box, I start typing and my typing disappears and shows up in the annoyting FIND bar at the bottom of the screen. So I have to double and triple click in every box requiring text to make sure FIrefox FIND bar knows I do NOT want to search the page.

Seriously, this is not a feature. Will this be fixed in the New 57 release? If so I am going to switch over to Slimjet or something else. Sorry.

Chosen solution

That is not standard behavior in Firefox.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • switch to the DEFAULT theme: "3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Appearance
  • do NOT click the "Refresh Firefox" button on the Safe Mode start window

Starting in Safe Mode seemed to fix it. But I lost the full menu bar across the top where I could select Private Browsing, etc. Should I leave it in Safe Mode then?

Thanks much for the help.

The menu bar might be hidden by default.

Open the Customize window and set what toolbars (Show/Hide Toolbars) and toolbar items to display.

  • Right-click empty toolbar area -> Customize
  • "3-bar" menu button -> Customize
  • View -> Toolbars
    *you can tap the Alt key or press the F10 key to show the hidden Menu Bar temporarily

None of this helped me, although to be fair, perhaps I did not understand the instructions fully. I could not find a way to disable the "Find Bar" from popping up automatically at the first letter I type into any box. If I double click on the URL bar for example, it does NOT pop up. Only if single clicking it. IF I start up with add-ons disabled then I do not see the "Find Bar". I can't see this is a feature that while typing in a URL location, all of a sudden your typing shifts over into a FIND bar that popls up. I hope the new 57.0 version will either fix this or give users the option to turn the FIND function off unless you intentionally click it from the pulldown menus. I know I didn't buy Firefox, and I appreciate the work y'all do on it, but man this is annoying. Thanks.

The purpose of the Safe Mode test was to see whether an add-on, such as an extension, might be causing this issue. You can view, disable, and often remove unwanted or unknown extensions on the Add-ons page. Either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+a (Mac: Command+Shift+a)
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons
  • type or paste about:addons in the address bar and press Enter/Return

In the left column of the Add-ons page, click Extensions. Then cast a critical eye over the list on the right side. Any system extensions that Firefox installs on its own are hidden from this page, so everything listed here is your choice (and your responsibility) to manage. Anything suspicious or unknown? If in doubt, disable.

Sometimes a link will appear above a disabled extension to restart Firefox before the change takes effect. You can complete your work on the tab and click one of the links as the last step.

Any improvement?

The only extension I have is the Classic Theme restorer. I attached two images. One shows the problem . I began to type my user name in the login box. So I begin typing 'r' and immediately the FIND bar box pops up and the remainder of my typing ends up in the FIND bar box.

Hmm. This sounds like an issue with Classic Theme Restorer.

Does this still happen if you disable CTR or possibly leave the Find bar at its default position at the bottom?

Thanks for your help. I had this problem before adding Classic Theme Restorer. Someone said that Classic Theme restorer would fix it. But it is the same. I had the FIND bar popup at the bottome and still it would behave the same.

THe problem was fixed somehow, but the problem disappeared after a day or so after I posted this. Then today, I downloaded the 57.0 update and it is not present either.

So thank you very much for somehow fixing the annoying pop up FIND bar.
