Why is Colorful Tabs not available in Firefox Quantum
One of the best add-ons ever invented - and it's no longer supported in Firefox Quantum. Not sure I can live without it! Should I roll back to an earlier version?

This seems to work well if there is one : Can use google search terms : Firefox Extension <old extension name> Comparable
Please let us know if this solved your issue or if need further assistance.
Colorful tabs has not been updated to work in Firefox 57. It looks like there is work to implement it in the future, but not at this time.
You can install an add-on like https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/multi-account-containers/ which allows you have to separate your work, personal, banking, etc. tabs from each other, and then install an add-on like https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/containers-theme/ which will actually change your Firefox theme to match your current container!
note, you should not downgrade Firefox to an older version. Firefox 57 contains important security fixes that are not available in older versions, leaving you vulnerable if you downgrade
Thanks, Tyler. Your solution sounds a bit OTT, I'm afraid. Not worth the hassle.
I'll just have to wait until Colorful tabs updates itself.
Hi, have you checked out VivaldiFox? https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/vivaldifox/
i hope colorful tabs is updated soon cuz this is boring i may as well use Edge if i have to look at this like this !
@WintryKiss: I agree - can't live with boring tabs for much longer.
I just tweeted Shivanand Sharma, the developer, begging him to update it.
hopefully he'll fix it :)
NOT IMPRESSED WITH NEW FIREFOX QUANTUM.
Don't like new format.
Prefer tabs underneath my toolbar.
I use Safari on my mobile devices.
I don't like the Chrome interface or anything LIKE it. Colorful Tabs is a NECESSITY for my use OF Firefox. I just rolled-back to FF 56. FF is going on the WRONG direction if it limits customization. That is the whole attraction TO Firefox! I REALLY have little respect for any software provider that offers a new release that breaks everything I've been using with the prior one - I don't NEED that sort of disruption. BACKWARDS compatibility is ESSENTIAL to GOOD software platforms going forward. Think Operating Systems. UNISYS OS/1100-OS/2200 is an excellent example.

Another setting is "tabs on bottom" Again, I don't need my desk drawer, neatly arranged, dumped on the floor. That is what Quantum did to my use of Firefox!
Sounds like the way to go, Paul. Please tell me how to roll back. Don't want to lose all my bookmarks, passwords, pinned tabs etc.
Modified
To anyone asking how to roll back, this is NOT a Mozilla supported solution. If you truly want to downgrade, you can do so by performing a quick Google search. I personally will NOT be giving out instructions to downgrade. And anyone suggesting that they downgrade to 56 to get rid of the UI needs to be slapped for recommending a version of Firefox that has security vulnerabilities.
Paul Hubert: I've answered this tab on bottom question more times than I care to admit. You need userChrome.css to achieve this:
Please don't just skim the article, the answer is in there.
shirls: Downgrading from a 57 profile to an older version like 56 will be bad as there have been major changes in profiles betweeen versions 55-56-57 that may cause incompatibility or unintended consequences. Also, Colorful Tabs is dead as the correct API is not implemented.
@ Moses: Thanks for responding.
I've no idea what "the correct API is not implemented" means, but given that Colorful Tabs is important to many people, is there something you could do to get it implemented?
We really want to support Mozilla - but they really need to listen to what we want and need.
@ Moses, yes, I saw your solution. But I gave up programming when I retired and I NEVER programmed on little boxes. :-)
Using a .css is NOT an end-user solution. I've tried that sort of solution with other things and it's a bloody pain.
AS I pointed out earlier, the only remaining solutions are to move to Chrome OR, in my case, to Safari - perhaps MOST likely Safari with Chrome as my backup.
I can't imagine anything WORSE or more stupid than making something like LastPass, a service we PAY for, "legacy" when it creates and keeps all our 18 character (or whatever we choose) passwords for us!
It doesn't seem to me as though Mozilla is interested in supporting its user base. IF that is the case, then its user base must just quit it altogether.
I use Thunderbird because I can color-code its folders, for example. VERY important to me with a couple of hundred folders!
@ Shirls, do a Google search and you will find a link to historical nightly builds - you can download from there. I don't like turning updates OFF entirely, but Mozilla has given me no choice.
@ Moses, if Colorful Tabs were the ONLY issue, your solution might BE a solution, but it is just ONE of several issues with the new FF. I have no desire to spend my time TWEAKING to TRY to COBBLE TOGETHER something sort of resembling what I already have in FF 56.
As I have commented elsewhere: BACKWARDS compatibility is the sign of good customer base support. At least UNIVAC did this with its signature OS. I don't know if UNISYS still does so.
LIKE Mozilla, their customer base has shrunk dramatically. But that isn't because they DID continue to support them. Obviously, Chrome had a leg up because of the power and ubiquity of Google, and the same in relation to Micosoft (look at the "Surface").
I left Linux because it never gained hardware vendor support, so, for example, my Dymo label printer software never ran there. Or my ScanSnap paperless software. Things essential to how I get things done.
MY alternative could only be Apple! Maybe I need to re-think Safari and Mail! - and even an iPhone (ugh - I have a Galaxy Note and NEED the stylus!).
@ Moses, I have used Chrome .css's before, but they won't let me point and click and pull up a menu to set DOMAINS to a color. Mucking around in configuration files is NOT my idea of everyday computer use.
FROM your example, using a .css to hide unwanted menu items doesn't come close to what can be done with Menu Wizard - which I also love!
The entire PURPOSE of using Firefox has been easy and extensive user configurability via extensions - and I HAVE sent support many times to developers. Firefox users don't LIKE being put into developers' boxes!
@ Shirls, here is a link that will point you to where to find older versions
https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/install-older-version-of-firefox
BUT it also has the following advice, which I think many will end up following:
If you can't use the latest version of Firefox, instead of installing an older version and changing your update settings, we recommend that you use the latest version of another browser:
Safari Google Chrome Opera
For me, it appears to be time to finally leave Mozilla behind forever. It is a sad farewell.
Oh, and, yes, I have sent support to the Mozilla Foundation, too! I guess THAT will end!! I really don't enjoy being shot in the FOOT!

@ Moses - WHERE was the end-user SURVEY about needed and desired features and interface design?
I gave up on beta builds not too long ago because they were breaking too many things too often. I like my machine just to WORK.
Yes, OS X - mac OS - advances have ALSO caused problems (with Karabiner, for example) and I was forced to use Command-Arrow Left/Right to go to beginning and end of line - and got used to it - though MORE movements do not help my now arthritic hands. And 69 isn't THAT bloody old!
Retired Systems Programmer. Hated IBM! :-D
@ Moses, I DO understand where you're coming from and that you ARE very much committed to HELPING - but I would hope you understand the dilemma of users as well who were committed to Mozilla BECAUSE of the features they - once - had. Take those away, and there remains NO reason for us to stay.
@ Moses, for now I'll see how long I can hold out on older versions of T-bird and FF. (sigh)
And, SHAME on you to suggest userChrome.css could come anywhere close to Menu Wizard or Colorful Folders (and I SEE no solution for THAT one!). THAT is VERY Lame!
Have you ever customized interface designs FOR end-user groups? Custom 'green screens' and paper FORMS? I HAVE. For users and for Computer Operators - even setup entire menus for Computer Operations with single choice solutions to technical problems on the systems. (Stratus VOS). I LISTENED to them. WATCHED them work. ASKED probing questions and found solutions they had never thought of.

And I agree COMPLETELY. I DO thank @ Moses for his response. But I also concur that "they REALLY NEED to LISTEN to what WE WANT and NEED"
