weird font in extra spaces with ?????1/21/2/1/2 only with sending out emails

more options

I am having problem with sending out emails. When I am typing in the body of the email, spaces created by using the space bar or tab key result in extra ???? question mark and weird symbols being inserted. I cant see them when I am typing but the receiver has noticed these symbols. If I forward an incoming email to someone, the outgoing message also has weird symbols in bedding in the email even though I don't type it myself. I have tried to upload a scan image but Mozilla cant open it. thank you Jo

this is a sample of the text The?fox//jumped//????over??the//fence????

Chosen solution

Thanks for your patience, I still think Matt had the right answer, perhaps just lacking specific details. Keep in mind this will probably not make existing email display right, only new emails. Perhaps test again AFTER you've done the following:

Go to Tools > Options > Display > Formatting and click on Advanced… on the right under Fonts & Colors. Now choose Unicode (UTF-8) as text encoding for both incoming and outgoing mail.

THe come from two sources.

1. Wrong character encoding. Go to the view menu under the three bar application menu on the top right select Character encoding and change it to something else. try Unicode if it is not set to that. It is usually set to western when this occurs.

2. a sub standard mail server. Yahoo made a mess of things recently until they reverted a change. Uncommon and requires to to make permanent changes to Thunderbird that may have similar effects on other messages.

Hi Matt that didn't fix the problem.

western was printing upside down question marks, unicode was a black triangle with question mark inside. I tried other options but thy were all giving me weird symbols.

Thank you Fabian, your directions to fix the problems were better. There seams to be many paths to change the fonts but only one way is the correct way. Thank you currently everything looks OK.
