If I set message deletion rules on the Trash folder context menu, will that apply ONLY to the Trash folder?

I get over a thousand Chinese spam messages/day. Most are successfully caught by the filters, and fill up the Trash folder. I'd like to bypass the Trash folder and/or have it automatically clear itself when messages exceed some small number.

The context menu for the Trash folder gives the option to do that clearing, but it says "Clear Old Messages" and doesn't make clear whether that applies to ALL old messages everywhere, or only to messages in the Trash folder.

Which is it? If I clear old messages on the Trash folder context menu, will I lose All my stored messages? This is not something I can just try.

When right-clicking the Trash folder, I don't see "Clear Old Messages". I do see 'Empty Trash' though. I guess that would do?
