First: only downloading 2-3 messages at a time, now: none
Hello,
I have been using Thunderbird for 10 years. At first it was great, but some 9 months ago, it was not able to download all my messages at once. Lately, it was as bad as downloading 2-3 at a time, then;
- . Today, when I do "get messages," I receive a "there are no new messages to download" back. There are messages, as I can see them in my gmail account.
There I have:
POP is enabled for all mail that has arrived since 7/29/08 IMAP is enabled
What is going on? Thanks.

This combination of statements is confusing. Please clarify.
Sorry, I put those sentences in different paragraphs, but this bulletin board displayed it all in one blurb.
I can see all the messages arriving in the web server, but I can't download them to my Thunderbird client.
The settings in my gmail account are:
- POP is enabled for all mail that has arrived since 7/29/08
- IMAP is enabled

I guess this board is not very active... If anyone knows another means to get help with this (other than this board), please let me know.
As a result, I unfortunately needed to abandon POP3. in IMAP at least I can read email...
Ok, I have tried to edit your incomprehensible text into something that can be read. Perhaps it is the very incomprehensible nature of your posts that sees you not getting the support you appear to think you should
Personally I suggest you try the following and see if it helps.
To diagnose problems with Thunderbird, try one of the following:
- Restart Thunderbird with add-ons disabled (Thunderbird Safe Mode). On the Help menu, click on "Restart with Add-ons Disabled". If Thunderbird works like normal, there is an Add-on or Theme interfering with normal operations. You will need to re-enable add-ons one at a time until you locate the offender.
- Restart the operating system in safe mode with Networking. This loads only the very basics needed to start your computer while enabling an Internet connection. Click on your operating system for instructions on how to start in safe mode: Windows 10, Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP, OSX
- If safe mode for the operating system fixes the issue, there's other software in your computer that's causing problems. Possibilities include but not limited to: AV scanning, virus/malware, background downloads such as program updates.
It is my guess your anti virus is the most likely cause of a problem, but I encourage you to go through the steps to determine if that is the case.
Should you find it is not the case. Please add the troubleshooting information to your post when advising it is not the problem so we know more about your arrangements than my guess you are using gmail. To find the Troubleshooting information:
- Open Help (or click on three-line-icon and select Help)
- Choose Troubleshooting Information
- Use the button Copy to clipboard to select all. Do not check box "Include account names"!
- Paste this in your post.
Hi Matt,
Sorry about my "incomprehensible text" but it is how the site chooses to display what I neatly type.
I tried the add-ons disabled and the safe mode long ago, and it didn't help.
There haven't been changes to my anti virus, and to anything else, really. TB just stopped being able to handle my 15 GB of email in POP. (If there is anyone being able to handle 15 GB with POP, I'd be very curious to hear about it.) The new account with IMAP seems to be doing OK since I got it going a week ago.
So now my only remaining question is that I would like to have a backup of the old account (since it was pop, it doesn't completely match what I currently have in the gmail server). Can I simply copy the path /Users/Liya/Library/Thunderbird/Profiles/ns1kdvwa.default/Mail/<this_account>? Thanks!
And yes, I see that the presentation has changed and now it displays things well. Wonderful improvement to whoever did it, thank you!
I will try editing the old posts now that the presentation is correct.
OK, I successfully edited the response. Now it seems the edit button is missing for posts, so here is what I see, followed by what I would want to have:
