I worked on several long emails that took a long time to write, with lots of breaks. I found ten copies of it in my IN box, in various stages of writing.

Most of them were to a mailing list, and I thought something bizarre had caused me to spam it! I posted all kinds of emails to the list apologizing.

But I later found by checking my gmail account online that I sent just one copy of each email, and didn't receive a single copy through the list.

Nor was it the case that gmail autosaved drafts and uploaded them when it synced and then mailed them to me.

What the heck gives, and how do I shut it OFF??!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am TELLING you. You know, quite a bit about Thunderbird drives me BANANAS.

Yours, Dora

No edit button here, and actually, it's worse.

It appears that all ten copies of each mail actually SENT - and, trust me, I did not do the clicking the send button! The listowner caught it and only two copies of one of them posted, and neither was the final post.

Ctrl+Enter is the keyboard shortcut. but when it is invoked you get the normal sending dialog. SO we are left looking for something other than Thunderbird, perhaps an add-on. What add-ons do you have installed?

I have installed the import/export tool, and the office theme/ skin. That is all. I've not installed any other add-ons.

Under appearance, MS Office 2003 JB Edition 3, under Extensions, Import/Export Tools and Lightning. Lightning came with it.

If all ten copies were actually sent: I have seen this occur before and on those occasions it was always the fault of the person who was typing.

They had developed a habit of accidentally pressing one of the 'Ctrl' keys with the heel of their hand at the same time as pressing 'Enter' when you want to go to another line. They were not ware of this. I was sat next to someone who was being driven quite mad by this and I spotted the action.

All the same, you need to know what is causing this to occur.

It is possible the send warnings are switched off and so you will not see progress of send nor a warning you used the 'Ctrl'+'Enter' keys by accident.

Please check the following:

  • Menu icon > Options > Options > Advanced > General tab
  • click on 'Config Editor' button
  • It will warn you to be careful .

In top search type: mail.warn Look for this line: mail.warn_on_send_accel_key Is it set to 'True' or 'False'? If it is 'False', double click on that line to toggle the 'False' to 'True'

then type: show_send Look for this line: mailnews.show_send_progress; Is it set to 'True' or 'False'? If it is 'False', double click on that line to toggle the 'False' to 'True'

Close window - top right X click on 'OK'

Please report back on whether you needed to switch on those two items.
