How to turn off annoying Recently Bookmarked list?

The Recently Bookmarked list is located in Library Icon > Bookmarks. Anyone with access to your computer can see it. As far as I know it can't be deleted, and it doesn't disappear when History is deleted. It could be a security risk. Dozens of bookmarks, including your financial, health, social, and political links are visible with 2 clicks.

The Opera browser allows you to opt out of Recently Bookmarked sites in Settings. Does this not make more sense? You still have bookmarks, but there are ways to make them hard to find. One way is to keep links in document folders outside of your browser, possibly encrypted.

Hi Greycatz, the situation hasn't changed from your thread nearly 11 months ago: Shouldn't the "Recently Bookmarked" list be optional?

The options are some combination of the following:

(A) Remove the Library button from the toolbar and use individual buttons instead, such as the optional Boomarks Menu button and History button you can find when you call up the Customize feature.

Customize Firefox controls, buttons and toolbars

That still leaves Library on the main menu.

(B) Hide the lists on the Library button menu using custom style rules in a userChrome.css file. I posted an example in the old thread, but haven't tested to see whether it still works.

(C) Don't let other people use your Firefox! For example, make sure others with access to your computer log in under their own Windows user name -- don't tell them your password -- so Firefox creates distinct profile folders for them with their own bookmarks, history, etc.

All good suggestions, and of course you want to be careful who has access to your laptop. I wasn't aware of the Recently bookmarked list for a while, maybe for months. New or unsavvy users could be vulnerable to privacy breaches from family, co-workers, cleaning staff etc. It's a smoking gun.

If this is a problem, I don't think Opera keeps recent bookmarks for ever.

Note that you can still see such a list in the Bookmarks Manager (Library) if you type a common character like a colon (:) in the search bar and sort by the added column. Recent bookmarks is the result of a database query and such a list can be generated all the time via the correct query. In the past Firefox versions used to have a smart folder on the Bookmarks Toolbar or in the Bookmarks Menu folder to show such a list (maxResult = 10).
