Firefox won't open. I have rebooted to no avail. I have killed it in Task Manager, uninstalled it, deleted the folder and tried to reinstall. At about 70% of the way through the installation, it pauses and there is a message saying that the installer is not responding. The installation panel then disappears. If I try to run it then, the behaviour is the same as it was to begin with, not opening but registering in the Task Manager.

Did you get the full installer from Download Firefox For All languages And Systems {web link}

Have you tried disabling your protection programs? Were you using the automatic install or manual?

I first reinstalled it from the existing setup executable that I had saved. That had previously worked without any problem. Then I went online and replaced it (Firefox Installer.exe). It didn't come from the "All languages" page. The installation was automatic.

With your suggestion, I turned off the antivirus and the firewall and tried again to run Firefox. Same problem. I tried to reinstall it and it the installer stopped responding again at about 70%.

Where did it come from?

That is the "All languages" page.

Have you tried the suggestions I posted?

My bad. I did not pick that up. The two URLs gave me different looking pages (no language list with the 2nd) and a differently named installation file for en-US.

As mentioned in a previous reply, I tried your suggestion of disabling the protection programs, by temporarily stopping my virus checker and firewall. What other suggestion/s should I have implemented?

Thank you,

Sean

Hi Fred,

Though I see your reply above, I thought I saw a longer response from you in MailWasher, before accidentally deleting it. I could be wrong.

I'll try the above suggestion and will get back.

Hi Fred,

The 32-bit setup executable worked. I was hopeful as soon as I saw it complete the initialising and place an icon on the desktop.

Thank you,

Sean

Note that it is possible that your firewall or other security software blocks or restricts Firefox without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox application. Remove all rules for Firefox from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full, unrestricted, access for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

Hi Cor-el,

It is already working again but I will definitely store your detailed advice for next time. During the faultfinding process I wasn't sure that I had entirely disabled the protection.

The fix (from Fred) was using a 32-bit installation, not 64.

Thank you.

Cheers,

Sean
