Last time I heard of that it was, I think, Avast anti virus that was locking the file and an exception had to be created in the product so it did not scan the nsmail temp file.

Suggest you exclude a path for scanning. c:\users\username\appdata\local\Temp\nsgD5E6.tmp \comtainedtemp\nsmail.temp

http://dlupdate.quickheal.com/seqrite/documents/en/manuals/Seqrite_Endpoint_Security_EPS_Administrator_Guide.pdf page 110 mentions excluding files and folders.

The product might have a different name, but the cause will be the same. Fix your anti virus.

Workaround: I don't know how to change my temp directory or anti virus settings. I have found a solution in making sure to remove attachments when trying to save drafts or send re-opened drafts.

Workaround is to simply REMOVE attachments when saving and then add them later before sending. As the below link explains, somehow saving a draft WITH an attachment screws up the directory.

[Note I did NOT use the "Bash" code suggested in the final paragraph below, which a solution a different person posted.]

Thunderbird temporary directory

Whenever you use Thunderbird on Linux you may encounter one annoying behavior.

If you open a message which is got an attachment - you just need to open the message, not to save the attachment! - Thunderbird will place such attachment in our temporary directory, usually /tmp. You find the file there, and you think you used the Save as function to place it there, so you open it and you edit it.

Then you close Thunderbird, and poof! It clears its temporary files and deletes your modified attachment, possibly containing a day's work.

The workaround is simple: just use a launcher that changes Thunderbird TMP directory and use that to start Thunderbird! Bash coding:

  1. !/bin/bash -e

mkdir -p /tmp/thunderbird TMP=/tmp/thunderbird /usr/bin/thunderbird "$@"

You may need to adjust the original binary path, then you can put such script in your path before your /usr/bin directory and you're done.

@earcuffs, sidestepping the issue does not fix it. You appear to be using a unix/Linux distro if you are using bash. So how come you have an anti virus product to change? What is it?

No, I am NOT using Bash or unx/Linux as explained in the note in my post: [Note I did NOT use the "Bash" code suggested in the final paragraph below, which a solution a different person posted.]

My operating system is windows 10 with the McAfee security suite provided by AT&T and also use the SuperAntiSyware program. I think the reason WHY the problem occurs is like the person explained in the link referenced https://www.franzoni.eu/thunderbird-temporary-directory/

ThunderBird and Mozilla sometimes react differently after various computer updates. I am not a computer whiz at all, so i have no clue to why this problem popped up. Since the procedure of NOT saving a retrieved draft WITH an attachment in it, works for me, it is a workable easy solution. No problems since.

What is the problem with fixing McAfee. Nope you off looking for workarounds when the problem is your anti virus. Perhaps you should have invested in a phone call to McAfee support if you don't know how to use the software. Or posted in their support forums. Or removed the product that was to complex for you and used windows defender which would not be causing the same problems.

McAfee was a good product once upon a time, then John McAfee sold the company. Since 2012 is has been like a running sore causing issue after issue with Thunderbird because the developers of the product just don't appear to care or test their product.

See the comments here https://wiki.mozilla.org/Thunderbird:Testing:Antivirus_Related_Performance_Issues#McAfee and make sure you disable the anti spam add-on if they still offer it.

https://smallbusiness.chron.com/add-exceptions-mcafee-69566.html use the instruction here to fix McAfee if you are unable to find them elsewhere. I googled those this morning. I do not use the product and council other to avoid it as well so if the instructions are for the wrong version. Ask McAfee for the correct ones.

That the guy posting your workaround is stupid enough to think he should be editing files in his temp directory would be enough for me to dismiss anything he said after that. His cure, break his operating system. Perhaps he should respect the purpose of the temp folder and the fact that temporary files in the Temp folder are meant to be deleted. Just like McAfee should not be so slow and heavy handed with it's scanning the you get errors in other software.
