cannot send email with IMAP using office365 account
My company recently gave us new email addresses which are with office365. I have been using TB for many years and never had issues until now implemanting this email address. TB sets up the email automatically OK and I can receive emails but it times out when sending. I have reviewed the current TB help forums however they seem to deal with whether or not an exchange server is being used. I've asked our IT guy if IMAP is enabled for this email account and am waiting a response. However I can receive email OK with the IMAP setttings so I have to believe that this is OK. The account works using their webmail system so I think it has to be one of my settings however I've tried all the combinations without sucesss. TKX

Try using the Exquilla add-on. It uses the Exchange Web Services (EWS) protocol to communicate with MS 365 email accounts. Be aware that that protocol is also on the way to being abandoned for MS Graph, which Thunderbird will hopefully support in future versions. Microsoft definitely wants you to use OWA or the Outlook 365/2019 (desktop) client.

Timeouts can be caused by security/AV apps that scan outgoing mail, but you should check that SMTP (sending) is enabled for the account, not just IMAP. It may turn out you have to configure the account for Exchange, for which there are a couple of add-ons to do this in TB.
Hi there, Thanks for your response. It may be that my account is only setup for OWA and I found a couple of other TB users on the TB forum with the same issue as myself so its not just me! I'm still working with my account administrator (who is not an IT specialist apparently) but you are probably correct with your idea. Its not the security/AV since I've already tested that. I'll keep you posted as this may be of help to others. BTW apparently Owl is not free and gets mixed reviews. Not tried it yet.

Stans, Thanks for your suggestion - it worked a treat. Of course I've only sent a couple of test emails back and forth but it worked without issue and was very easy to setup with the included and automatically displayed help file after installation. Very much appreciated as I have used TB for years in various forms with all kinds of email addresses (Gmail was an issue for a while too - but got sorted some time ago) as it seems from the forums that many folks are having issues with outlook365 which their companies migrating to. Hopefully this will help a bunch of other people too. Cheers :)
Thank you for the suggestion. My outlook email (office365) also did not work in Thunderbird. I could receive email but not send it via smtp. Even using the smtp port and encryption information provided to me I kept getting the "authentication failed, 80004005 error" message other people on the forum were getting. This add in worked for me also. I can now receive AND send email in Thunderbird.
