TB refuses to get mail at startup and displays a setup page instead of INBOX, like it used to?
Running Windows10 Pro 64 (Windows update 2004) and TB 78.1.1 32bit. Despite "Check mail at Startup" being set in server settings - TB DOESN'T Check. Instead of opening my INBOX as it used to on startup, it opens a page of settings. I've tried entering the ADDRESS of my INBOX for TB to use - it has no effect. The settings Page still displays . . . These things are BASIC FUNCTIONALITY - can we have them back please? The "Manual Sort Folders" Add-on, (purported to Solve the INBOX issue) is not supported by TB 78.1.1 anyway. I really don't think it should be necessary to resort to Add-ons for such basic functionality
Chosen solution
In TB 78, if the 'When TB launches...' box in Options/General is checked, TB opens in the folder that was open at last closing. If the box is unchecked, TB opens in the Inbox of the default account.
To have a specific folder open on TB launch, there is a setting in Manually sort folders, compatible with TB 78.

could this be the issue? https://thunderbirdtweaks.blogspot.com/2019/09/i-lost-my-profilemail-on-update-to.html
I don't think so . . . . It's simply that the Location: box in Options/General seems to be totally IGNORED by TB, irrespective of ticking the "show the start page" option or not.
Similarly, closing TB with the InBox OPEN, alters nothing . . . .
TB STILL opens at the Account Settings/Choose what to setup Page . . . .
Ludicrous.
What location box are you talking about.... if your referring to the start page setting it points to a web page and has nothing to do with the pane that should be displayed.
So what p[age of setting does it open. Clearly not one asking for you to set up your accounts again or this conversation would have creased several iterations ago.
The Front end crashed when I uploaded some screen shots . . . taking about half an hour's typing with it . . . .
The Location: box is shown here when you open Tools/Options. . . . The address of my InBox is entered there, but is ignored by TB whether the Start box is ticked or not, and/or whether or not, I open the inbox BEFORE closing and re-opening TB. In every permutation I have tried - The Inbox is NOT displayed unless I open it . . . . .

THIS is what I see when TB Starts normally . . . . .
https://user-media-prod-cdn.itsre-sumo.mozilla.net/uploads/images/2020-09-30-17-17-19-6e34fc.png
WHY would I want to see this? I now have to click in <InBox> to trigger the fetch-mail, and view any new messages . . . .
This is what I WANT to see when TB starts. . . . . My InBox OPEN with newly fetched messages shown

I think the order is correct. The thumbnails are too small to see clearly, and the filenames have been scrambled by the system from what I uploaded. Double-clicking them in here (to check) then gives no way back (that I could find) to the preview without crashing the front end again . . . . So - it's as good as I can get it . . .

I just followed that & I now have a huge mass of extra files & folders where I had 10 profile folders before & I still can't open any of the profiles I've spent all night setting up! It's a bigger mess than ever!

If you select that accounts Inbox prior to closing then upon restart Thunderbird should open on that accounts Inbox folder as Thunderbird remembers and uses last session.
In that accounts 'server settings', I presume you have selected all three of the following:
- 'Check for new messages at startup'
- 'check for new mesages every eg: 20 minutes'
- 'Allow immediate server notification when new messages arrive'

Thank you ALL for your answers and patience with me over this issue . . . .
It is now RESOLVED with the Manually_Sort_Folders Add-on . . . .
TB now opens at my <InBox> and fetches any new mail . . . . . ;-)
I would STILL seriously recommend that this feature is incorporated into TB

I think all of the solutions advocated, including addons, misses the point. I have many email accounts and fixing things so that the default account inbox or the last one used is visible is short sighted. The BIG question for me is why did the developers choose this new interface. What was wrong with having the inboxes displayed when a different email folder was selected? What was the guiding light for the change?
Are not all of the functions on the new panel not available on tool bars? Are you just pandering to lazy people who do not want to do a little more clicking. For me, a sidebar panel that can be hidden with all the buttons listed would be a better approach. This would take up less real estate and the panel could be resized to the users needs.
Old adage, if it is not broken, do not fix it. From my point of view the inbox display function worked just fine.
At least give us a usable path to restore what we are looking for. As for the fixes and other changes made, I will bump into them over time. I will thank them for security and functionality fixes but not for gratuitous unneeded changes. My opinions.

There is a user interface discussion list here.
I suggest you engage in the discussion there as this is not really a support issue, but a discussion on user interface design.
