How does one turn off animated GIFs

I find animated GIFs distracting when reading text.

In past releases of Firefox Android, there was an extension that let me "freeze" them. I can't seem to find that extension on Firefox 92.1.1. Where is it?

In Tools/Options/Advanced/General/Config. editor there is a preference, image.animation_mode, that defaults to normal. Right-click, Modify, and set it to once or none.

I must be incredibly dense… I'm looking high and low for the `Tools` menu option.

I see:

  • Bookmarks
  • History
  • Downloads
  • Add-ons
  • Sign in to synchronise
  • Desktop site (switch)
  • What's New
  • Help
  • Settings

There's no "Tools" section in Settings either.

Last night, before posting this question I also tried entering `about:config` into the browser address… that didn't seem to do anything (unlike Firefox on other platforms).

On Linux, I install the Web Developer add-on, and that has a feature to freeze GIFs. On my phone (Android 4.1, Firefox 68.11.0) , there's a "Toggle animated GIFs" add-on I was able to install. On the tablet… newer Firefox, seems that extension is no longer available.

Hi

That option is not available in Firefox for Android and neither is that add-on at present. We hope to add support for more add-ons in future updates.

No problems, is there a Bugzilla bug I can subscribe to to get an idea of when this stuff might hit the package repositories?

No problems… I've subscribed and will keep an eye out. I had assumed there was some compatibility issue that prevented that particular extension from being offered (others like NoScript are there). Looks like this is a wider issue: it'd be a shame if Firefox dropped its extension capabilities, as it's a feature that really does set it apart from other browsers.

Anyway, here's not the venue. I'll keep an eye on that Github issue and see where that progresses.

That is great, thank you for your feedback.
