How to clean up Thunderbird and Eliminate Unnecessary Files
It takes a long time to backup my Thunderbird profile files (20+ years of use). There are numerous ".final" files and others that seem to be unnecessary and drastically slow down the backup process. How can I clean up the needed Thunderbird files and eliminate the others?

A bit of an issue here. what are .final files? They are not a default inclusion in the Thunderbird profile folder.
Perhaps have a look in one with a text editor and try and determine what the content is.
A bit more googling offered some minor breadcrumbs. One topic suggested they appear only in the profile when the cache is disabled. But perhaps the most useful was https://www.reddit.com/r/firefox/comments/tmg3o2/what_are_final_files_in_cachemorgue_in_the/ and it's link to https://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?f=38&t=3073682&p=14890902
These bug reports make more sense to me. They appear to original with this 10 year old bug https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=940273 This bug indicates they may contain a message body on occasions. https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1561559 This bug, while just closed explains how the things interact with the service workers and the cache. https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1647017
