I have a Dell XPS running Windows Xp Pro 64 bit. Firefox was working well earlier today, but now it tells me the proxy server is refusing the connection.

I had a similar problem, but found a workaround: On the Options page, under Advanced, on the Networks tab, in the Connection section, I clicked on Settings. It was set to "Use System Proxy settings", so I changed it to "Auto-detect Proxy Settings for this network". I no longer get the message, and things appear normal. I'm not sure what this was set to before, so I don't know if the 3.6.4 update changed it. Nor am I sure what the effect(s) of changing it to "Auto-detect" is(are). It would be nice to find out if this is a valid resolution, or if I just opened my computer up to something I don't want.

I found the same work-around, and downloaded the newer version of Firefox. Now my avast antivirus software doesn't work. I reset the proxy to the original setting, firefox does not work, and neither does the antivirus software.

My browser told me the proxy server refused connection. When I solved that problem, I later found out my wife's browser (same computer) gave her the same message, even though I could connect with the internet. I solved the problem the same way. On your son's login, start the browser, go to "tools", then "options", then "advanced" tab (far right), click on "settings", and select "auto detect proxy...".
