My bookmarks are gone, yet again. This has happened before, but last time it was fine. I was able to restore them since they get saved automatically some days. This time, the "restore" option is not working. It says it can't get to the files or something. My bookmarks are VERY important to me. I would like them back. And please, PLEASE do not tell me to check the "lost bookmarks" section. I read through everything that looked applicable and none of it helped in the least. I apologize if I am being rude, but my bookmarks ARE ALL BLOODY GONE! I even looked in some MozillaZine thing for help, and it hasn't helped at all! It just tells me "this is here, which is a bunch of letters and numbers you'll never understand, and that's there, which is ANOTHER bunch of letters and numbers you'll never understand!!" NONE OF IT MAKES ANY SENSE WHATSOEVER! I want to talk to someone personally about this. An English-speaking human, preferably. God, I don't even CARE! Just help me get them back!!

Did you make a backup copy of the 5 JSON backups in the bookmarkbackups in the Firefox Profile Folder? Each day that you use Firefox the oldest gets removed and after five days all old backups have been replaced by a backup without your lost bookmarks. --- Maybe this is your issue: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Locked_or_damaged_places.sqlite

I have the same problem and none of the suggested solutions work; neither can I create new bookmarks in an attempt to create a new list. It has taken me YEARS to create my bookmarks list and, like Sare, I WANT THEM BACK! This issue is obviously not an isolated one, I have seen numerous such items. Surely FIREFOX you must come up with a solution ( and don't blame textTorbuttontext, I don't haveit installed. PLEASE HELP!

Did you read beyond the part about the Torbutton? That only applies IF you have the Torbutton extension installed.

Did you read this section of that article? https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Lost+Bookmarks#Restoring_bookmark_backups

Okay, it turned out that places.sqlite or something was corrupt. A very nice person on the messenger walked me through it. I can't remember the details, but what I needed to do was get to places.sqlite (might be spelling it wrong) and delete it. Then I restarted firefox and restore worked. But I had that issue where restore wouldn't work.

Tried suggested solutions and no success. Found backup folder and "opened" via firefox but gobbledegook came up.

Frustrating as hell.

Please help

Carlj1940@aol.com thanks

I've encountered the same problem; I (reluctantly) upgraded Firefox after years of happily using version 2, and discovered that I should have, apparently, saved my bookmarks before updating.

There is NO "places.sqlite" file anywhere on my hard drive.

Following the procedure at https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Lost+Bookmarks#Restoring_bookmark_backups restores the bookmarks folder saved *today*. . . after Firefox reverted to a *two year old file* and saved it over my existing one. (How do I know it's two years old? It has house search information from before my toddler's birth, that's how.)

There is no bookmarkbackups folder.

Searches across my hard drive for the following files turn up nothing useful:

   *  bookmarks.bak
   * bookmarks.html
   * bookmarks.html.moztmp
   * bookmarks-(date).html
   * bookmarks-(date).json

Oh, there *is* a bookmarks.html file that's larger than the 7/2 one that's been created; it is, however, from a transfer from IE bookmarks dated 2006.

None of the rest exit. Even searching for just the extension of .json turns up nothing.

I really, really want my bookmarks back, and I am not thrilled about this; I trusted Firefox not to screw up on an upgrade, and that's the only reason I didn't make a backup before installing. Silly me.

Okay, now that I have my toddler slightly less underfoot, here's my solution, thank god.

C:\Documents and Settings\\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\ (found at http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox#Windows_2000_and_Windows_XP)

DID actually have several backup points. I was able to import from html into my new install of Firefox, so 2-3 years of bookmarks have been successfully restored, to my unmitigated relief.

Backing this up to a thumbdrive now. :-P

My bookmarks disappeared last week, and the suggestions have not worked. I stilkl have NO BOOKMARKS and no one responded to my last request for help/. I cannot use the backup as I get the message Unable to open backups" or some such nonsense. Windows won't open or recognize the json files and I am stuck
