Firefox will not restore session after crash

Hello, I am writing because whenever I resume Firefox (like from a crash or restart), it will not reload my previous pages. Instead it will only open a new window and I have to dig through my history to find and reload the pages from my previous session. Firefox is set to remember history and to show my windows and tabs from last time.

My Firefox version is up to date (although it seems that the version doesn't matter). I have gone into about:config, set browser.sessionstore.max_tabs_undo to 40, set browser.sessionstore.max_windows_undo to 10, and reset broser.sessionstore.resume_from_crash to true. None of that has helped and the latter kicks back to false every time Firefox restarts.

I have had this issue occur a couple of times in the past, and if I recall, I had to create a new account. If told how to, I can do this again, but I would prefer to get to the root of the problem to prevent this from occurring again (plus I'd hate to lose all my history again). If anyone can help me with this, I'd greatly appreciate it. If you need to know anything else, feel free to ask. Thank you.

Hi,

there sometimes seems to be problems with the session save/restore system for some reason.

I don't have much advice for you about fixing it as it is - I actually think you know more about it than me, as I didn't know those about:config settings - but I can recommend the following add-on which can take over the session management in Firefox. In addition, it is highly configurable and by all accounts very stable, so this might just be the solution for you: Session Manager add-on on addons.mozilla.org

Please let us know how above works out, and if we can be of further assistance. Detailed feedback is appreciated and helps us to help you better, plus enables us to better help other users with similar issues.

Thank you, but this add-on sounds like a lot of work to do what Firefox is already supposed to be capable of doing. I'm also a bit concerned about how it auto saves (mostly because I can't figure out how and when). Is there any way to get to the root of the problem and fix it as opposed to trying to dance around it? Thank you again.

Session Manager IS the solution to this problem. You don't have to do anything except choose which session you want restored (and which tabs) You can even name and save sessions if they are a collective group for you. Also, when FF crashes, it does restore your windows. At least I never had a problem with it.

I have the same problem.

Sarah, it's nice to know that session restore works for you, but the purpose of this thread is that it sometimes does NOT work.

AllyKat...thanks...I might try that addon, but still, Firefox's own session restore should be made to work.

Anyone have any other ideas about why session restore does not work for some people?

I'm using 3.6.6, and my computer is otherwise up to date.

Thank you for the support. Since I haven't found a solution here I have been trying the Live Help service with little luck as well.

As an update, I have done a clean reinstall (I believe it was called that) per the recommendation of the person I was talking to. It did not work.

The person never replied to me when I updated him, and I haven't had a chance to contact Live Help again. I will continue to try and if I get a solution, I will update here for you guys. Thank you.

I have finally found a working solution with help from Zzxc.

You do have to create a new profile, but you can save everything from browser history to ad-ons to dictionary. It even restored the pages I had open in the old profile.

https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Managing+profiles

This shows you how to create a new profile. I left the old one and named my new one as "name" - New Default - "current date"

http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Profiles#How_to_find_your_profile

This shows you how to find all of your information and settings for both profiles. It shows you what file is what (so you can pick and choose), but if you just copy everything from inside the old profile folder and paste it into the new profile folder, you should be gold.

This seems to have worked for me. If it turns out that I copied and pasted the problem as well, I will post it here, but as of now, everything appears to be in working order. Thanks.
