Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.

See "Basic Troubleshooting: Make a new profile":

There may be extensions and plugins installed by default in a new profile, so check that in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions & Plugins" in case there are still problems.

If that new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile, but be careful not to copy corrupted files.

Your bug report points to the possibility that the start-up crash may be related to a problem with Trusteer Rapport, a required download by some financial institutions for accessing user accounts at the financial institution. The problem was previously "fixed" in the release of Firefox 8.0.1, but may have re-appeared; whether due to another problem with Trusteer Rapport or the release of a new version of it is being investigated.

Try the following, with Firefox closed, then see if you can start Firefox:

  • Trusteer Rapport
    • Windows: Start > All Programs > Trusteer Rapport > Stop Rapport
    • Mac: System Preferences > Other > Rapport > Stop Rapport"

The update to Firefox 8.0.1 was not "pushed out" to Windows users as a small number of Windows users were reporting the problem. If you are unsure of your Firefox version, or you know for certain that you have Firefox 8.0 installed and want to try installing Firefox 8.0.1, you can download the full installer, SAVE to your hard drive, run the installer, then see if you can open Firefox.

This crash is caused by a "Frankenstein-build". Please reinstall Firefox using the downloadable installer.
