Firefox will no longer let me save files

As of today Firefox will no longer let me save any images or links. Also when I go into options and check the box "show the downloads window when downloading a file" it reverts back to its unchecked state the next time I open it.

I think there is possible a connection with "Gadgets" because this started after I tried to download and updated version of one of the gadgets.
