I get an annoying ad at the bottom of my screen. When I hit "disable", it shows up as a sidebar. How do I get rid of these annoying ads?

I have looked and haven't found anything on this subject. I'm using Firefox 16.0.2. on a Windows 7 system. I get these ads in a banner covering the bottom of my screen. If I click the "X" button, it will disappear for a little bit and reappear. If I click the "disable" button, it'll appear as a side bar and it doesn't have a "disable" button on it, just an "about this ad" button.

If I click it's "X" button, it reappears as a banner at the bottom of the screen. While the ad is in the side bar position, I get this annoying banner at the bottom saying "related: ".

How do I disable this? It's annoying and I get enough ads on the websites I search.

Scan for Malware

Sometimes a problem with Firefox may be a result of malware installed on your computer, that you may not be aware of.

You can try some of the following programs to scan for malware:

Further information can be found in the Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware article.

Update Firefox

Update Firefox to the latest release

Reset Firefox

The Reset Firefox feature can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your essential information. Note: This will cause you to lose any Extensions, Open websites, and some Preferences.

To Reset Firefox do the following:

  1. Go to Firefox > Help > Troubleshooting Information.
  2. Click the "Reset Firefox" button.
  3. Firefox will close and reset. After Firefox is done, it will show a window with the information that is imported. Click Finish.
  4. Firefox will open with all factory defaults applied.

Further information can be found in the Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings article.

I found an add-on called "Yontoo" on my Firefox. I have removed it ans it seems to have corrected my problem. However, just to be sure I'm continuing to scan for malware which will, if there, need to be removed.
