I just installed firefox for the first time. Version 18. I wanted to use finance charts in Yahoo Finance. Firefox told me that I needed to download a version of Flash, so I installed FlashPlayerPlugin_11_5_502_146.

When I try to draw a chart, all that I get is a white screen. I get two instances of the afore mentioned plugin running. I get a lot of network traffic, but I never get a chart.

I don't know what to do next.

Could you try disabling graphics hardware acceleration? Since this feature was added to Firefox, it has gradually improved, but there still are a few glitches.

You might need to restart Firefox in order for this to take effect, so save all work first (e.g., mail you are composing, online documents you're editing, etc.). Then perform these steps:

  • Click the orange Firefox button at the top left, then select the "Options" button, or, if there is no Firefox button at the top, go to Tools > Options.
  • In the Firefox options window click the Advanced tab, then select "General".
  • In the settings list, you should find the Use hardware acceleration when available checkbox. Uncheck this checkbox.
  • Now, restart Firefox and see if the problems persist.

Additionally, please check for updates for your graphics driver by following the steps mentioned in the following Knowledge base articles:

Hi - thanks for your help. Unfortunately disabling hardware acceleration did not resolve the problem (my graphics driver was already up to date).

Are you able to make finance charts work on your system? As an example, go to finance.yahoo.com, enter the symbol AAPL (or any other), when the small chart is displayed on the right hand side, click on any time frame (1d, 5d, 6m etc.)

Do you get a chart or an empty white space like I get?

Thanks again, Devin

That content is probably loaded via JavaScript (I see an animated loading icon), so make sure that you do not block JavaScript.

Reload web page(s) and bypass the cache to refresh possibly outdated or corrupted files.

  • Press and hold Shift and left-click the Reload button.
  • Press "Ctrl + F5" or press "Ctrl + Shift + R" (Windows,Linux)
  • Press "Command + Shift + R" (MAC)

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).

  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe mode start window or otherwise make changes.

Javascript is not blocked. reloading the web pages and bypassing the cache did not work starting in safe mode did not work

Are you able to make this work?

Problem solved:

Even though I had javascript enabled in firefox, my version of java was old and firefox had disabled it in the background. I upgraded, rebooted and the finance charts work now.

Thanks for your support.
