I use to go to the menu "tools" and when I clicked on "downloads" it would open a new small window with my downloads listed on it. All of a sudden now when I do this it opens a new tab which I don't want and don't like. How do I get it to go back to how it use to function? My OS is Windows 7

Chosen solution

Yes, downloads have been integrated into the Library dialog with the rest of your history. Within the browser, a green arrow should appear on your toolbar where you can view the status of your most recent downloads. You can find a complete write-up here: Where to find and manage downloaded files in Firefox.

Not everyone likes this change. There is a way to revert back to the old download manager. See: Got new version, want to go back to previous download box.
