on the drop down menu for firefox(in my bookmarks) I used to be able to customize firefox to change my themes. Now when I click on it, it only loads words, no pictures or thumb tabs to hover over or anything. When I click on the words, it does nothing. I have uninstalled and reinstalled Java. What is going on? What else can I do to fix this. And I have Windows Vista, just in case you need to know. Thanks Sharon

If you are looking for lightweight themes (previously called personas), it's possible that the old link is obsolete. Could you try this page:

https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/themes/

If that isn't it, could you post the address of the page that isn't loading correctly?

Nope, sorry the above link you sent me did not work either, it comes up, but only words. No pictures or thumb tabs or anything. I suppose it has something to do with this computer because the other computer I have, which has old windows xp on it works with customize Firefox. Any ideas on what else I could do??? Thanks for all your help. Sharon

Hi Sharon, have you noticed any issues lately with secure sites (HTTPS) saying there is a problem with security certificates and having to add exceptions? If so, I will ask you to check a couple of things.

More generally: When you have a problem with one particular site, a good "first thing to try" is clearing your Firefox cache and deleting your saved cookies for the site.

(1) Bypass Firefox's Cache

Use Ctrl+Shift+r to reload the page fresh from the server.

Alternately, you also can clear Firefox's cache completely using:

orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Options > Advanced

On the Network mini-tab > Cached Web Content : "Clear Now"

If you have a large hard drive, this might take a few minutes.

(2) Remove the site's cookies (save any pending work first). While viewing a page on the site:

  • right-click and choose View Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
  • Alt+t (open the classic Tools menu) > Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"

In the dialog that comes up, you can remove the site's cookies individually.

Then try reloading the page. Does that help?

Firefox also has a feature to block images from loading from particular sites. This used to be easy to do accidentally by right-clicking on an image; now it's less common.

You can use the Page Info dialog, Media tab, to see whether images are being blocked from a particular server.

While viewing a page on the site:

  • right-click and choose View Page Info > Media
  • Alt+t (open the classic Tools menu) > Page Info > Media

The dialog should display a list of URLs. Click the first one and start slowly arrowing down through the list (with the down arrow on the keyboard) and keep an eye on the checkbox above the preview area that says "Block images from {server}". If you see any that are blocked, stop and uncheck the box, and then finish checking the rest of the list. If you unblocked anything, after closing the dialog, reload the page to see whether the images display.

Add-ons also can block images, particularly if something about them seem to be like an advertisement...

More advice in this article: Fix problems that cause images to not show.

Clear the cache and cookies only from websites that cause problems.

"Clear the Cache":

  • Firefox/Tools > Options > Advanced > Network > Cached Web Content: "Clear Now"

"Remove Cookies" from sites causing problems:

  • Firefox/Tools > Options > Privacy > "Use custom settings for history" > Cookies: "Show Cookies"

You can remove all data stored in Firefox from a specific domain (addons.mozilla.org) via "Forget About This Site" in the right-click context menu of an history entry ("History > Show All History" or "View > Sidebar > History") or via the about:permissions page.

Using "Forget About This Site" will remove all data stored in Firefox from that domain like bookmarks, cookies, passwords, cache, history, and exceptions, so be cautious and if you have a password or other data from that domain that you do not want to lose then make sure to backup this data or make a note.

You can't recover from this 'forget' unless you have a backup of the involved files.

It doesn't have any lasting effect, so if you revisit such a 'forgotten' website then data from that website will be saved once again.

Hi! I tried what you suggested, clearing the cache and cookies. I got excited, it almost worked, but...... I loaded the page and for the first few seconds, it started to actually load correctly(showing pictures-thumbtabs), not words. Then in a split second, just words again, like it changed it's mind in mid stream. I have even reset Mozilla, still no luck. Any more suggestions? Thanks so much for trying to help me. Wish I had not reset mozilla, not I can not get my status 4-evar back, since it is an add-on. Arrrggggg!!!

                                        Sharon

Do you have any extensions that can block content?

Also make sure that security or other software isn't blocking any content.

Try to boot the computer in Windows Safe Mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) as a test to see if this helps.

Hi Sharon, this part is really interesting: "for the first few seconds, it started to actually load correctly(showing pictures-thumbtabs), not words. Then in a split second, just words again, like it changed it's mind in mid stream."

Most of the things that could cause this (extensions, custom style files) would be shed by using the Reset feature, so it's very mysterious.

Although, if you have extensions installed at the system level (for example, security suite toolbars/filters) they may be active after a reset. You can review, configure, disable, and often remove extensions on the Add-ons page. Either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+a
  • orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons

Anything there that might filter/block style sheets or modify pages post-load? You can disable them all as a test.
