I have created a very simple message filter to return an email with a template. This filter works when I run it manually, but it is not working automatically. Though I should say, without changing a thing, it did work automatically a few times. I restarted Thunderbird without add-ons and still it does not send messages automatically. I even tried it with other filters disabled and it still does not send messages automatically, it only works when I manually run the filter.

So...how do I get Thunderbird to send a message automatically in Message Filters?

Can you check your settings.

In 'Message Filter' select the filter to Edit

Check:

  • select 'Manually Run'
  • select: 'Getting new Mail'
  • select: 'Filter after Junk classification' (this should not send to any mail filtered out as Junk)
  • select: 'match all of the following'
  • then select the condition and action

example:

  • select [From] -> [is in my address book] -> [select Address book]
  • [Reply with Template] -> [Select template]
  • click on [OK]

note: selecting [is in my address book] -> [select Address book] - then you can be sure that the auto response will only go out to new emails received from people in your address book and not to spam harvesters. But this is up to you and depends upon why you use an auto reponse.

Then make sure the filter is enabled and positioned at the top of the list. Filters run in the order listed, so if you have other filters working they may have moved emails into other locations, hence the auto filter may not work. but if you need some filters to work before the auto responder filter to move specific emails to another folder because you do not want the auto responder to reply to them, then they need to be above the auto responder filter.

Make sure you also have the setting in Account Settings as follows:

  • 'Tools' > 'Account Settings' > 'Server Settings' for the mail account
  • select: 'check for new messages at startup'
  • select: 'Check for new messges every eg: 10 minutes'
  • select: 'Automatically download new messages'
  • click on OK to save any changes.

Thank you kindly for the support.

1) I checked everything you requested, and that is the way I had all those settings

2) The filter is working because after requesting that an automatic email be sent, I added a second action after the automatic mail action, to move the originating email to the trash...which is working.

3) It is just that, the automatic email is not being sent. Though it is being sent, when I manually run the filter.

4) I only have one simple condition: From + contains + email address

Is there anything causing an automatic email not to be sent?

I'm still searching for a solution. Can you confirm : 1. the emails you want the auto filter to fiter are new unread emails automatically being received to the thunderbird mail account Inbox? They have not been read on neither server webmail nor in thunderbird.

2. Is this a pop or imap mail account?

3. Move the filter to the top, so it is the first filter to work.

The issue was that I was copying the entire email address for the search instead of the plain name.

For instance if the email address was Mike <mike@something.com> and I searched on the entire string, it would not work.

Instead, I just changed the filter to sort out "Mike". Obviously it would be better to have it act on the entire email address instead of just the plain name, but for now is works as a workaround for almost everyone but "Mike" who does not get an automatic update response, my apologies to him or her, but my thanks to everyone else!
