I am running Thunderbird 91.1.2 (32-bit) on windows 10. I have three mailboxes. One mailbox is SMTP and new mail in this box shows as unread even when it has been read. The other mailboxes are POP and the new mail in these boxes instantly shows as read when it is received. In preferences "Automatically mark messages as read" is unchecked.

Using Bitdefender? Its antispam tool has been marking mail as read before it's opened.
