links in my emails won't work

When I click on hyperlinks in my email messages nothing happens. Also when I go up to the Help menu and it should connect to the internet nothing happens there either. Was there a recent update to Thunderbird? It shows I am running V. 24.5.0. I have checked that Firefox is my default browser and the other solutions and nothing changed. What else can I do, thank you.
