Use these steps to remove saved (form) data from a drop-down list:

  1. click the (empty) input field on the web page to open the drop-down list
  2. highlight an entry in the drop-down list with the mouse or cursor Down key
do not click the mouse or press the Enter key
  3. press the Delete key (on Mac: Shift+Delete) to delete the highlighted entry

This doesn't help - I tried this from the help list before I sent the request.

Perhaps the reason is I do not understand your No 1 statement. What does the "web page" have to do with an email address. When I address an email, I am at the "TO:" line in the email - not on a web page.

When I type in the first letter of the address, a list drops down. One of the items in the list is an old, and invalid address that I would like to delete. Moving the arrow down to the invalid address and hitting Shift/Delete (this is an iMac) does not work.

Perhaps I did not ask the correct question. I have seen someone delete an invalid address before, and it seemed to require many more steps than this. Thanks.

Is this question about Firefox and are you visiting a web based e-mail service or is the question about Thunderbird or another email program?

I am using Firefox, so I believe it is about Firefox - and how to delete an unwanted email address in Firefox memory.

Do you get a drop-down list when you start typing or if you double-click that field where you can select saved names?

I do get the drop down list after I type the first letter of the email address, and it changes as I add additional letters - - - - - nothing happens if I double click on the TO: or address field.

You can use the cursor Down key to highlight an entry in the drop-down list and press Shift+Delete to remove that highlighted entry. Don't click with the mouse although you can hover an entry with the mouse and press Shift+Delete.

It is pretty clear that I do not understand what you mean.

I have tried what I think is using the Cursor down key (the one with the arrow printed on the surface) and going to the bad email address - and it does delete the address - -- -

But the next time I start the process over again, that same bad address is still there - - - my objective is to delete it permanently delete the address from the system so I do not accidentally (when I am in a hurry) select the incorrect address and send the email to an invalid address and then get the message advising me the mail is not deliverable.

Somehow, I feel like I am not using the correct terminology to ask my question because I am understand you suggestion must be the correct way but I am missing a step somewhere.

I will try again - - - while I wait for another response. Thanks for your patients.

I just tried the process about 20 times - - - I go to Compose an email - - - I type the first letter - -- in this case a K - -- the bad email address appears in the list -- - I press the arrow key to highlight the bad address - - -- I press shift and hit Delete - -- The address goes away, just as you say - - I close the compose email and open a new Compose email page, and do the same thing - - - the bad address is still there My objective is to permanently remove the bad address - - - not just for the current occasion - - My friend had to change his email address because the organization that provided his original address closed - - but it is still in the address book. Perhaps there is no way to get it out - - or perhaps I have to disable the automatic drop down list.

Unfortunately, I will be away from the computer for a while, but thank you for your help - - - I will pursue the issue and try to find more precise terminology to ask the question - - - and in fact, just found a couple of more addresses I would like to delete from the system once I discover the procedure. Thanks again.

Hi Mike,

What email service are you using to contact your friend? It seems the best way will be to remove the bad address from the contact book you have there.

Cheers, another Mike :-)
