This is due to a Ubuntu related Extension they (Ubuntu) add in Firefox on Ubuntu. I forget the name. Disable the extension and you should the be able to install search engines.

edit: now that I am on desktop and not a tablet:

As long as the "Unity Desktop Integration 2.4.6" <strike>plugin</strike> Extension is enabled I could not add search providers to Firefox. https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity-firefox-extension/+bug/1202383
