TB /p created new profiles but deleted evrything else - help!!!!
After 2 full days work setting up and migrating from Outlook with everything so far working well , I wanted to create profiles to match my Outlook accounts. After creating them I clicked "Start Thunderbird" and now I've got nothing, no messages, no address books

just what do you think a profile is? you have created a new profile. That would be empty unless you have created some accounts in it.
I would suggest you install this add-on in every profile you create. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/addon/profileswitcher/?src=search
On the file menu is adds an entry to launch another profile and lists all those that are registered.
Matt, As a beginner with only 50 years of computer experience under my belt I apologise for not understanding the TB literature. I thought profiles were a sub division of accounts which would let various family members send emails with their own personality. So that my emails would say 'From Bill' and my wife's would say 'From Wendy'. We use the same server and filter the incoming messages into our respective folders. Am I asking too much? Bill P.S. It would have been nice of TB to say "I'm about to remove an existing profile and everything in it - is that OK?"
Not remove, added and switched to That is why I said install the add-on. So you can switch back to the original profile, without messing with command line switches..
If you have 50 years of experience, I am sure you will have run into the identities in outlook express. once the add-on is installed, profiles in Thunderbird become basically just like that. IT is also the easiest way to get back to where you were. You will have to use the profile manager, and the add-on makes it accessible.
In some regards you are asking to much. But with an IMAP mail account it should be possible. With a POP one it will never work as well as you would like I think.
The IMAP account will allow you to maintain two identical sets of folder, about the only way you are going to get you and your wife replying and sending mail with different display names from the same physical email address.
Matt,
Sorry if I was a bit childish, I was very low. Maybe it didn't remove my existing data but it certainly overwrote it all with a blank profile with no warning (that I noticed).
But anyway, with one profile, I have now created identities in TB for us, and some other entities, and filters to distribute incoming mail to folders so I'm fixed and this can be closed.
Thanks, Bill
